Easy Perspective with Google Sketchup

Hate drawing backgrouds? Can’t get the perspective in your drawing right?

A while ago I purchased a book all about perspective for comics. I started out enjoying the exercises in it, however when the exercises got more complex, I found that I couldn’t apply most of the techniques to digital art, and I had to use miles of paper just to get the vanishing points in.

What do we do when we can’t get perspective right first time? We cheat and let a free 3D program do it for us.

Drawport draft chapters

February 9, 2010 at 11:11 AM | In Project updates | Leave a Comment

There’s still a few little problems with the overall story I have to iron out, but these chapter overviews I’m working on are coming along quite well. They’re pretty much just brief summaries on the events I plan to include in each chapter. So far it appears the story is going to fit nicely into 10 (or maybe a little more, like 12) chapters.

I would post these chapter summaries, but it would spoil the story for anybody who’s eagerly awaiting the pages of this graphic novel (if anybody is).

The only problem with the story is there’s a little too much teen romance. The whole story is pretty much a parody of teen romance, but having too much of the same thing can get stale and repetitive. I also don’t know how to show it to an American audience because it parodies aspects of American culture.

Maybe I should share a little of the concept just so people can get what I’m talking about. The whole story takes place in the colourful, industrial, cartoon coastal city called Drawport, where pets are anthropomorphic, birds sing musical numbers and the buildings have a curved, distorted cartoon look. The whole story is a parody of high school romance, American culture and Saturday morning cartoons, however I’m trying to structure the story so we get to find out a lot about the main characters and their problems. They are ordinary people trying to deal with their developmental and family related problems.

Helpful links on colour symbolism

I was going to write a whole article myself, but this site pretty much explains what emotions are associated with certain colours.

This is also a helpful link because it goes into the meanings of variations of certain colours (like dark yellow). I know it’s a site for a software program but you can ignore that and just absorb this information.

I saw this Toy Story thing!

February 7, 2010 at 6:05 PM | In Miscellaneous, Reviews | Leave a Comment

I finally did it and went to see Toy Story 1 and 2 in 3D (it’s a promotion, you get 2 movies in 3D for the price of one ticket).

The only problem is weekend + raining = a million people in the theater + kid’s movie = a million kids in the theater.

Some Tips for Drawing Machines

Right now my obsession is learning how to draw believable looking vehicles and machines (this also includes robots and I do believe that once I know how to draw machines in general, I just apply that knowledge to my knowledge of character drawing/human anatomy and there, robot!). This is just a series of things I have noticed about machines and vehicles that might be of some use if you’re also having trouble with this subject.
